Family Health Fair

On Saturday, March 6th from 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. attendees can enjoy a family health fair and tour The Colossal Colon® Exhibit. At the health fair the following presentations will be available in the auditorium at the hospital:

Colorectal Cancer is the 2nd leading cancer killer in the UnitedStates, but it is preventable and treatable.  Tens and thousands of lives can be saved each year through proper screening.  “It is the cancer that nobody wants to talk about,” said Jeffrey Hartford, M.D., Gastroenterologist at Hunterdon Medical Center.  Dr Hartford explained, “While more common with advanced age (>50) colon cancer can sometimes present as early as the twenties and thirties.  Early colon cancer is often completely asymptomatic, but signs and symptoms might include a change in bowel habits, distention/bloating, fatigue, weight loss, abdominal pain, anemia, or obvious blood in the stool.”  Hunterdon Medical is hosting this exhibit to help prevent cancer and encourage early detection through screening such as colonoscopies. The Colossal Colon® is the creation of Molly McMaster, a colon cancer survivor who was diagnosed on her 23rd birthday, with the help and support from Glens Falls Hospital in Glens Falls, NY.  The Colossal Colon® is a project of The Colon Club and is dedicated to the memory of Amanda Sherwood Roberts, who lost her battle with colon cancer at age 27. The exhibit was designed and built by Adirondack Scenic, Inc., a custom design and fabrication company.  The Colossal Colon® was unveiled on the “Today Show” in 2002 and has traveled to over 115 cities around the United States and Canada.

An Introduction to ChiRunning and Chi Walking Focus of Program at Hunterdon Health and Wellness Centers

As part of their March education series, the Hunterdon Health and Wellness Centers will offer An Introduction to ChiRunning® and ChiWalking®, on March 8th from 5:30 p.m. – 6:30 p.m. in Whitehouse Station and on March 11th from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in Clinton.

ChiRunning® and ChiWalking® combine running and walking with the principles and inner focus of Tai Chi, an ancient Martial Art.  The result is postural alignment and motion based on the body’s design, laws of physics, and simple principles of nature. 

This program will be led by David Stretanski, ChiRunning®/ChiWalking® Certified Instructor. Learn to improve your focus and technique, reduce or eliminate pain and injury, promote greater speed and distance with much  less effort, develop greater posture, improve balance, strengthen and tone more muscles without overworking them and develop a strong mind-body connection.

Cancer Survivors Sought For Volunteer Training

The Hunterdon Regional Cancer Center is seeking cancer survivors, available during the day, to participate in a volunteer program designed specifically to offer support to individuals with cancer and their families. The two day training will be held Tuesday, March 16th from 6:00pm – 9:00pm and Saturday, March 20th from 9:00am-4:00pm.

Partners in Healing is a group of trained cancer survivors who provide peer support to patients currently under-going cancer treatment. Partners in Healing links patients or family members with a volunteer whose experience is similar to the patient’s. The PIH objective is to provide emotional comfort and individual support, as well as direction to the many resources in the community available to cancer patients and their families. All volunteers must be at least eighteen months beyond completion of their own cancer treatment.

Registration is limited and acceptance is based upon an interview process and completion of an application. Registration is required by February 15, 2010. For more information or to register please contact PIH (908) 788-2527.

Food Sensitivities vs. Food Allergies Topic of Program

As part of their Healthy Minds, Healthy Bodies lecture series, Hunterdon Medical Center and the Clinton Book Shop will host an evening program, Food Sensitivities vs. Food Allergies.   This program will be held on Thursday, March 18th from 6:30-7:30 p.m. at the Clinton Book Shop located at 33 Main Street in Clinton.

Join Nicole Schaldone, MS, RD, Gastroenterology Nutrition Specialist for Advanced Gastroenterology and Nutrition, will discuss the difference between food sensitivities vs. food allergies and testing to determine sensitivities.  This will be an opportunity to talk to a dietitian about gastroenterology issues.  Bring your questions to this informative presentation.

This program is free of charge.  All participants will receive a guest pass to be used at the Hunterdon Health and Wellness Centers in Clinton or Whitehouse Station. To register call the Clinton Book Shop at 908-735-8811.
