NORWESCAP/First Book–Hunterdon County Gives 2,750 New Books to Local Literacy Programs Serving Children In Need
NORWESCAP/First Book-Hunterdon County announced today that 2,750 new books will be given to 8 literacy programs that serve Hunterdon County children in need. This was made possible by the Borders/Walden Books holiday promotion and the generosity of their customers. Recipients of Borders gift cards include Public Health Nursing, DesMares School, Early Intervention, Calvary Church, Right At Home Day Care, Interfaith Hospitality Network, Start Smart Academy and Country Tyme Day Care. Each child will receive one book per month for a year, which enables the children to start their own home libraries they can share with their siblings and families. Helpline Seeks Friendly Visitors
Hunterdon Helpline, the county’s all-volunteer telephone helpline reached by dialing 2-1-1, is looking for friendly people with time to visit the county’s elderly who need companionship. It only takes and hour or two a week to share a smile with a shut-in person. Friendly visitors can share memories and photos, play cards or help write letters at the senior’s residence. Training is given. Call 2-1-1 if you would like to become a friendly visitor or you know a person who would like a visitor.

First Book, Borders® and Waldenbooks® Holiday Program Brings New Books To Children in Need
First Book, an award-winning nonprofit organization, and Borders Group, Inc., a global retailer of books, music and movies with more than 1,100 stores worldwide, announced that they will again team up for another holiday giving campaign. This is the third consecutive year that Borders, Waldenbooks and First Book have joined together for a holiday giving campaign.
Beginning November 1 and ending December 24, customers in Borders and Waldenbooks stores will be encouraged to donate $1, $3, $5 or more to First Book as they make their holiday purchases. The funds donated by Borders and Waldenbooks customers will be converted to gift cards and distributed to local organizations affiliated with First Book to purchase books for the children they serve. Help the YMCA Angel Patrol This Holiday Season!
The Hunterdon County YMCA invites the community to join them in spreading some joy this holiday season. The Y’s Angel Patrol collects toys, canned & boxed food items, baby clothes & baby toiletries, mittens, gloves, hats, books, and adult toiletry items to distribute to those members of our Hunterdon County community who are experiencing financial hardship. Volunteer Opportunities in Hunterdon County
- Meals on Wheels is seeking volunteer drivers to deliver noon-time meals to homebound, elderly or disabled residents in Hunterdon County, Mon-Fri. They also need volunteers to assist the part-time staff in packing meals and to serve as board members. Anyone interested in Volunteering should call 908-735-8332.
- South Branch Watershed Association needs volunteers to clean-up the South Branch of the Raritan River. For more information call 782-0422 or 236-7111, M-W-F, from 10AM-3PM.
- The Hunterdon County Animal Shelter in Holland Township is in need of dedicated volunteers to help with all aspects of day-to-day operations. Dedicated people are wanted to walk dogs on a regular basis, socializing with cats, fundraising, promoting the shelter, clerical work, recruiting volunteers, basic training of dogs and general cleaning.
